Industrial Water Management Gains Importance Across China’s Manufacturing Sector

China’s industrial base spans chemicals, electronics, textiles, metals, food processing, pharmaceuticals, and other water-intensive activities. These industries rely on water for processing, cooling, cleaning, production support, and utility operations. As industrial facilities pursue greater resource efficiency and stronger environmental controls, water treatment is becoming increasingly connected with production continuity, wastewater management, reuse, and broader efforts to improve industrial water efficiency.

A comprehensive market assessment by Markntel Advisor reveals that the China industrial process water sector is valued at USD 8.98 billion in 2026 and is projected to reach USD 13.29 billion by 2032, registering a CAGR of 6.75% during 2026–2032. The study identifies Water Treatment Chemicals as the leading product type. Detailed insights are available in the China industrial process water report.

Industrial Water Efficiency Gains Greater Attention

Water efficiency is becoming an increasingly important consideration for Chinese manufacturers as industries seek to control resource consumption while maintaining production requirements. According to China's Ministry of Water Resources data reported in 2026, industrial water consumption declined by 1.73 billion cubic meters in 2025, while water consumption per 10,000 yuan of industrial added value fell 7.2% year on year. The latest national water-efficiency data illustrates the broader focus on improving industrial water productivity.

This focus supports demand for technologies that can reduce freshwater intake, improve treatment performance, and enable water to be reused within industrial facilities. Treatment strategies increasingly need to address the characteristics of individual processes, particularly where wastewater contains complex organic compounds, dissolved salts, suspended solids, or other contaminants.

Treatment Chemicals Remain Important

Water treatment chemicals play a central role in maintaining suitable water conditions across industrial operations. Coagulants and flocculants can assist in separating suspended materials, while biocides and disinfectants help manage biological activity. Corrosion and scale inhibitors can protect equipment and water circuits from operational problems associated with mineral deposits and material degradation.

The role of chemical treatment varies according to water source, process requirements, and the intended use of treated water. Chemical solutions can therefore operate alongside filtration, separation, membrane systems, ion exchange, and other treatment technologies to achieve required water-quality characteristics.

Advanced Treatment Technologies Support Reuse

China's industrial water-management approach is increasingly connected with recycling and reuse. The Ministry of Industry and Information Technology has promoted improvements in industrial water efficiency, including technologies for high-concentration organic wastewater, high-salinity wastewater, membrane materials, green treatment chemicals, and intelligent monitoring and control. Its industrial water-efficiency action plan also promotes practices such as segmented water use, multiple-use cycles, and cascade utilization.

Membrane-based treatment can be particularly relevant where industries require higher-quality water for reuse. Depending on the application, filtration and separation processes can be combined with chemical treatment, biological treatment, ion exchange, or disinfection to address specific contaminants and water-quality requirements.

Industrial Parks Strengthen Treatment Requirements

Industrial parks are becoming an important setting for centralized wastewater management because multiple manufacturing activities may operate within the same area. Different industries can produce wastewater with distinct pollutant profiles, creating requirements for treatment systems that account for variations in chemical composition and environmental risk.

In 2026, China's Ministry of Ecology and Environment introduced technical guidance for developing pollutant discharge standards for centralized wastewater treatment facilities in industrial parks. The guidance recognizes industrial parks as areas with concentrated pollutant emissions and emphasizes differentiated control based on industrial characteristics and environmental risks. The industrial-park wastewater treatment guidance also addresses conditions supporting treated-water resource utilization.

Monitoring Supports Better Process Control

Industrial water treatment increasingly depends on monitoring systems that can track water quality and treatment performance. Sensors, laboratory testing, process controls, and digital monitoring can help operators identify changes in water chemistry and determine whether treatment systems are operating within required parameters.

Monitoring is particularly relevant for facilities using water-recycling systems because treated water may be directed toward different applications with varying quality requirements. More integrated monitoring can therefore support operational decisions while helping facilities identify treatment issues before they affect production processes or downstream water systems.

Environmental Standards Influence Technology Adoption

Environmental regulation remains another consideration for industrial water treatment. China's environmental authorities continue to develop and update sector-specific water-pollutant standards, including requirements covering industries such as textiles, food processing, and other manufacturing activities. The national water-pollutant standards framework provides access to current standards and implementation information.

These developments can encourage manufacturers to evaluate treatment processes based not only on water reuse potential but also on discharge requirements, pollutant characteristics, monitoring capabilities, and compliance considerations. This creates a more integrated role for treatment chemicals, equipment, systems, and specialized services.

Outlook for Industrial Water Management

The China industrial process water sector is projected to increase from USD 8.98 billion in 2026 to USD 13.29 billion by 2032, expanding at a 6.75% CAGR. Greater attention to industrial water efficiency, wastewater recycling, advanced treatment technologies, industrial-park management, and environmental standards is expected to remain relevant as manufacturers balance production requirements with increasingly structured water-resource and pollution-control objectives.
