Blood Transfusion Diagnostics Market Momentum: Donation Drives and Awareness Campaigns
Every blood transfusion depends on a chain of tests: blood grouping, cross-matching, and screening for infections. The diagnostics behind that chain are a steady, safety-critical market, and demand for them is rising.
Market Size and Projections
According to Grand View Research, the global blood transfusion diagnostics market was valued at USD 4.4 billion in 2022. It is expected to reach about USD 7.0 billion by 2030, a CAGR of 5.8% from 2023 to 2030.
A few segment figures from the report:
- Product: Reagents and kits held the largest share in 2022 at 66.24%. They are also the fastest-growing segment, at a projected 6.1% CAGR. Donor and recipient samples need repeat testing, which drives recurring purchases.
- Application: Disease screening led with about 60.4% of revenue in 2022 and is projected to grow at 6.0% through 2030.
- End-use: Blood banks held the largest share at 39.22% and are projected to grow fastest, at 6.2%.
- Region: North America led with 39.59% of 2022 revenue. Asia Pacific is the fastest-growing region, at a projected 7.1% CAGR.
Key Market Drivers and Catalysts
- A rising burden of blood-related disease. Conditions such as cancer, hemophilia, anemia, and thrombocytopenia, along with liver and kidney disease, increase the need for transfusions. The report cites roughly 1.8 billion anemia cases worldwide in 2019, and notes that about 36,000 units of red blood cells are needed in the U.S. every day.
- Trauma, surgery, and childbirth. The WHO estimates about 1.3 million road traffic deaths each year and 20 to 50 million non-fatal injuries. Many of these cases, along with surgeries and childbirth, need transfusion support.
- Concern about transfusion-transmitted infections (TTIs). Hepatitis B and HIV-1 are the main risks. Donor screening is therefore a priority, especially in lower-income countries where these diseases are more common.
- Technology and automation. Real-time tracking of blood inventory and hemoglobin values supports more efficient blood management. Fully automated platforms now combine blood grouping and TTI screening, and rapid diagnostic kits are becoming more available.
- Regulation and government action. Governments are tightening quality and safety rules. For example, India's Drug Controller General now requires blood bank cold chain devices to be medical grade and class B certified. According to the WHO, 73% of reporting countries had national blood policies as of June 2023, and 66% had specific legislation on transfusion safety and quality.
- Growing donation awareness. The WHO reports about 118.5 million blood donations collected globally. Voluntary unpaid donations rose by 10.7 million between 2008 and 2018. Campaigns by governments and non-governmental organizations continue to expand the donor pool.
