Growing demand for metals is increasing pressure on manufacturers to improve resource efficiency and develop circular supply chains. Zinc is well suited to recycling because recovered material can be reprocessed and used in a variety of industrial applications.

The Zinc Market is projected to reach USD 45.26 billion by 2035, while secondary zinc production is expected to record a 2.95% CAGR between 2026 and 2035. Recycling is becoming increasingly attractive as environmental policies and carbon-reduction targets influence industrial supply chains.

Galvanized steel is one of the most important sources of recyclable zinc. During steel recycling, zinc-containing residues can be collected and processed to recover usable material. Modern recovery technologies can achieve high zinc recovery rates from selected industrial residues.

Electric-arc-furnace dust is another important secondary resource. As electric-arc-furnace steelmaking expands, the volume of zinc-containing dust available for recovery can increase. Specialized processing technologies can extract zinc while reducing the amount of material sent to landfills.

Europe is a particularly important region for recycling development because carbon regulations and circular-economy policies are encouraging lower-carbon material supply. Secondary zinc can help manufacturers reduce dependence on primary production and improve environmental performance.

Recycling can also improve supply security. Zinc mining is geographically concentrated, while demand is distributed across multiple manufacturing regions. Local recovery systems can therefore provide additional sources of material for downstream industries.

Construction and automotive sectors can benefit from these circular systems because both industries consume significant amounts of galvanized steel. Recovering zinc after products reach the end of their useful life can help create a more sustainable material loop.

Technological innovation will remain important. Hydrometallurgical processes, improved residue treatment, digital tracking, and advanced separation systems can increase recovery efficiency.

The growth of recycling does not eliminate the need for primary zinc production. However, secondary material can complement mine supply and reduce the environmental intensity of the overall industry.

As sustainability requirements become more demanding, companies that develop efficient zinc-recovery systems and transparent circular supply chains can gain competitive advantages. Recycling is therefore expected to become an increasingly important part of the global zinc industry's future.
