Bentonite is an important clay mineral widely used in industries that require swelling, binding, sealing, and absorption properties. Its principal mineral component is generally montmorillonite, which gives many bentonite grades the ability to absorb water and expand. These characteristics make bentonite valuable in oil and gas drilling fluids, foundry operations, iron ore pelletizing, construction sealing, absorbents, and environmental applications. Different grades are processed to meet the technical requirements of individual industries.

The diversity of industrial uses is supporting opportunities in the clay market. In drilling operations, bentonite is commonly used in drilling mud formulations to help control fluid loss, suspend cuttings, and maintain borehole stability. Oil and gas exploration and well construction therefore represent important demand sources. Foundries also use bentonite as a binding material in molding sand, where its properties help maintain mold strength and shape during metal casting.

Construction applications provide another important source of demand. Bentonite-based materials are used in waterproofing systems, slurry walls, and selected ground engineering projects. Its swelling and sealing properties can help reduce water movement through suitable barriers. Environmental applications are also expanding as bentonite is incorporated into landfill liners, containment systems, and remediation solutions.

Product processing and formulation influence the performance of bentonite. Sodium bentonite is generally associated with stronger swelling characteristics, while calcium bentonite is used in applications that may require different absorption or processing properties. Activation and other treatments can modify the mineral's performance for specific industrial requirements.

Manufacturers must maintain consistent mineral quality, moisture levels, and particle-size distribution to meet customer specifications. Mining conditions, transportation costs, and competition from alternative industrial materials can influence supply economics. Environmental management is also important because extraction and processing operations require responsible land and water practices.

As industrial users seek reliable binding, sealing, and absorption materials, bentonite is expected to remain an important clay category. Demand across drilling, foundry, construction, and environmental applications provides producers with opportunities to serve diverse customer industries.
